Belmont Shore Residents Association MINUTES EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING November 8, 2012 The meeting was called to order by Secretary Jeff Miller at 6:00
pm. The other members of the Executive Board present were: Max Alavi, Chrisjeon
Clemmer, Frank Elizondo, Marvin Jones, and Treasurer Robert O'Connor. President
Bobby Bluehouse, Vice President Terence Endersen, and Executive Board members
Julie Dean and John Forstrom were absent. Twelve additional BSRA members and
visitors were present. The agenda for this meeting and the minutes of the October 11
meeting were approved. LBPD Lieutenant Kanaley reported details of these incidents from
the Belmont Shore Crime Report for October: A robbery on October 2 at 10:30
pm was an attack on a resident at his home. The victim was driving home and
was followed, after an alleged "road rage" incident on the 405
freeway, by several assailants in another vehicle who attacked him with a
knife and took cash from him as he arrived at his home. An assault on October
20 at 1:00 am was an attack by several patrons at Shannon's bar on a security
guard. The assailants were not from Belmont Shore. An assault on October 28
at midnight was an attack on a Halloween-costumed female on Second Street. Lieutenant
Kanaley was uncertain if arrests were made in any of these incidents, but he
said he will follow up and report back to BSRA. Second Street business property owner Bill Lorbeer advised that Sunday
is a holiday (Veterans Day) and the parking will be free at Shore parking
meters, but the meters will be in operation on Monday. Parking will also be
free on the three weekends after the Christmas Parade, for the convenience of
Second Street shoppers. Secretary Miller reported the status of several city projects,
as supplied by Judi Evangelista from Third District Councilman DeLong's
office: Livingston Drive paving is scheduled for November 17 with completion
in late December. The Second Street and PCH intersection work is scheduled
for completion by November 19. Bicycle route stencils are planned for Bay
Shore Avenue; BSRA will send a letter of support. There was a discussion of
the danger posed by bicycles and skateboards on the sidewalks; suggestions
were made for improvement. Commissioner
Eric Forsberg reported recent Parking Commission actions. He noted the
trimming of trees in the median and plans for replacing the lights on these
trees, continuation of the employee bus pass program, and a delay of the
sidewalk tree replacements until January. Mr. Lorbeer noted that a survey of
the bus pass program indicates that between 45 and 80 employees are now
taking the bus to work instead of driving. Secretary
Miller asked for suggestions for guest speakers at future meetings.
Secretary
Miller announced the effort by the Belmont Heights Community Association
(BHCA) to landscape the Broadway median, following the city's construction
work on that street. They are requesting donations to assist the effort; the
address for donations is BHCA, 375 Redondo Ave. # 332, Long Beach, CA 90814. An audience
member asked for assistance in reducing the problems caused by Panama Joe's,
which she said encourages excessive drinking with nightly promotions. She
stated that inebriated patrons leaving the bar cause problems in the
neighborhood; there have been arrests in front of her house and recently,
bloody footprints in the street. She was encouraged to report this at the
next BSRA meeting when LBPD Commander Beckman will be present, and to
complain to Councilman DeLong's office. It was noted that DeLong supported
Panama Joe's entertainment license over the objections of the police. The meeting
was adjourned at 7:30 pm. Submitted by: Jeff Miller, Secretary |
